Although most people with COVID-19 get better within weeks of the illness, others can experience long-term effects. This is rare, however there are a range of new, ongoing or returning health problems reported four or more weeks after first being infected with the virus. We define a long-hauler as still having some sort of symptom 28 days or later after they were first infected.
While it’s clear that people with underlying health issues such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, smokers etc are more likely to have serious side effects of COVID, there isn’t a clear link with these health threats and long-term problems. Long COVID can even happen in people who have mild/no symptoms.
The long-term effects could be due to organ damage, a persistent inflammatory or autoimmune response or another reason, but more studies are looking into this. Brigham Health experts said; “Patients who were never severely ill are coming to the clinic and saying that their lives are different now.”
Researchers estimate about 10% of COVID-19 patients become long haulers. SARS-CoV-2 can attack the body in different ways, causing damage to vital organs such as the lungs, heart, nervous system, liver, kidney and more. Persistent symptoms often include brain fog, fatigue, headaches, dizziness and shortness of breath, among others.
We know that COVID-19 starts as an inflammatory response in the body, which can lead onto a chain of events with many different results and symptoms. Unfortunately, researchers are still trying to find the answer as to why this can lead to prolonged symptoms in some people.
It is unlikely, as usually after being infected with COVID-19, the contagiousness goes away after a week or so. The vast majority of long-haulers test negative for COVID, despite lingering symptoms. It is uncommon to see persistent fevers, which suggests that person is no longer infectious, but it can vary.
The most common lasting symptoms (stated by the Centers for Disease Control ) are fatigue, joint pain, shortness of breath, a cough and chest pain. Other issues include cognitive problems, depression, difficulty concentrating, muscle pain, headache, rapid heartbeat and an infrequent fever.

A bad case of COVID-19 can cause permanent problems in the lungs and scarring, but even mild infections can cause persistent shortness of breath. Experts have said it can take months for a person’s lungs to function normally again after the damage from COVID-19. Breathing exercises and respiratory therapy are advised to help with the recovery.
Some people suffering with severe cases of COVID-19 are showing signs of kidney damage. Reports say that 30% of patients hospitalised with COVID in China and New York developed moderate or severe kidney damage. New York says the percentage could be higher.
Symptoms of kidney problems in patients infected with COVID include high levels of protein in the urine and abnormal blood work.
Studies show that 60% of people who recovered from COVID-19 had signs of ongoing heart inflammation, which can also lead to palpitations, rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath. The inflammation also appeared in those who had had mild cases of COVID-19 and had no medical issues before the infection.
Loss/change in taste or smell are a common problem associated with COVID-19. Both smell and taste are related, because the cells in the nose are affected by COVID-19, which can result in lost sense of smell or taste. It can also make familiar things smell or taste bad, or different.
Though not a life-threatening symptom, prolonged problems such as this can cause lack of appetite, depression and anxiety. Most people with COVID-19 who have these symptoms, will improve within a couple of weeks.
Diabetes (1 & 2) is a risk factor for serious cases of COVID-19, and some people seem to develop the illness after they recover from COVID.
Long-term COVID-19 in children is possible and includes symptoms such as depression, tiredness, shortness of breath and other symptoms. We do not know yet whether children who have had COVID are more or less likely than adults to experience ongoing problems.
It is reported that healthy children who did not have any previous illnesses or medical conditions are being seen and treated at a clinic, after only having mild bouts of COVID-19.
Some symptoms that can happen after hospitalisation are similar to the mild symptoms some people may have experienced with COVID-19. It can be hard to know whether they are caused by the effects of hospitalisation, the long-term effects of the virus, or both.
The effects of hospitalisation after ICU (intensive care unit) can include severe weakness, difficulty thinking and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) which involves long-term reactions to a stressful event.
